Loud Music Spoils Conversation. While the food was fine, the atmosphere left much to be desired. Not 15 minutes after being seated, a very loud blues band started playing. Normally I enjoy dinner music, but I was eating dinner with friends who I wanted to speak with. The waiter even had difficulty delivering our dishes to the right people, because nobody could hear him. By the time dinner was over, I was hoarse from shouting out short sentences, and the dinner conversation was totally spoiled. What is a good meal if one cannot enjoy a conversation with it?
Good Italian restaurant on Columbus. Choosing an Italian restaurant in the North Beach area is probably more challenging than picking a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. The concierge at the Marriott recommended this place. It's a nice location, the decor is inviting and they have limited seating outside. We ordered Gnocchi and Fusili. It was quite good. The pizza was alright but certainly not the best. I would probably recommend the pasta. Price-wise, it is definitely very attractive. While we were not a big party, it would seem like the place can accommodate large parties easily.
BEWARE of waiter named CLIFF--he will steal your money!!!. Despite the fact that the food and drink were pretty good at this restaurant, I would not recommend dining here because of a member of the wait staff...his name is CLIFF. I dined there with a group of my friends, one who actually knew Cliff. He was nice enough throughout the dinner, and when it came time for dessert, we weren't going to have any, but Cliff offered a couple of desserts "on the house." So we had dessert and waited for our bill...the bill comes and to our surprise, Cliff charged us for the desserts he said were on the house! In addition to that, I checked my credit card statement 2 days later only to realize that Cliff had charged $10 extra on my card! I wrote nothing in the tip spot, because as a group, we paid with a couple of different cards; I had already included my tip in the total I asked him to charge. So, I went in to speak with the manager and he showed me my receipt--and someone (CLIFF) wrote in a $10.00 tip in the spot I had intentionally left blank! I pointed out to the manager that the writing in the tip line did not match my writing (in the total line) and they agreed to refund me. But for me, it's not about the $10 refund--I would gladly give up the refund to have CLIFF FIRED!!!
nice lunch. We stopped here during a day of wandering around north beach. We had a variety of things, salads, pasta's fish. Everything was pretty good but nothing really impressive. Nice cute place and good service. Much quicker than the place next door so if you are on a schedule I'd advise to come to figaro's instead of calzones. The food is a little less greasy too with a nicer variety. I would return.
Amazing gnocchi, cute place, bad drink. Went here on a recent trip to town. Very cute and cozy place. Great location. My drink was awful (appletini) but my mushroom gnocchi was awesome! Everyone else's food was fabulous too. Would go back for the pasta but would get wine or soda instead of a mixed drink.
bad service. Had lunch there this past sunday. They have a guy who is very aggressive in trying to recruit passers-by into dining with them. That's how we ended up eating there. We waited for what felt like an eternity for our server to come to take order. The guy who recruited us to sit down saw that we were just sitting there looking expectant, but he didn't care if we were served so long as he did his job to trap people into eating there. There was a table next to us who managed to get their orders fulfilled and bread basket with drinks, even though they were seated 5 minutes after us. After what felt like almost 20 minutes, I told my husband that if someone didn't come in 10 minutes, we were leaving. Let me note at this point that they were not crowded at all that sunday afternoon. The waitress walked over right then, and was about to speak to us, until she saw a friend leaving and decided to go over and chat with her. After she was done chatting, she finally took our order. Five minutes later, she came back to ask us to repeat our order because she apparently forgot. After that, the food came at a reasonable time and everything was okay. I had their spinach and ricotta ravioli. It tasted good but made me feel sick later. Their mojito was disgusting. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Given the fierce competition between restaurants in North Beach, I'm shocked this place managed to stay afloat.
Italian cuisine!!! A+. I recently came to Figaro and enjoyed the great food, wait staff, and atmosphere! I had the pollo con parmiagno...it was unbelievable. I definetly reccomend this place to all future north beach goers!!
ADORABLE WAITER AND YUMMY FOOD. Gian Luca, daytime manager, is absolutely the cutest waiter ever! He is funny and attentive. Everything is done to perfection with him! We usually have him seat us every Columbus day! The food is resonably priced and tasts excellent! The salads are refreshing and taste wonderful. I love the Bruschetta. Their dessert selection is absolutly the best. The little chocolate pyramid and other deserts are soooooooooo tasty!
Good wine, bad food. I recently moved to North Beach and have been trying all the Italian restaurants I can. Recently, I went to Figaro and it was not a good experience. We were seated promptly, but were not given any menus. It took 10 minutes for the host to realize he'd forgotten to give them to us. The outdoor patio was nice and I liked the atmosphere. When our waitress finally came over, she was plesant and recommended a great bottle of wine. We ordered an appetizer and dinner. The buchetta was ok, but for $6, you only get 3 pieces... most places give you 5 or 6 pieces. It took a long time for us to get our food, our waitress even came over and asked if we had eaten yet... not a good question! I orderded the veal picatta, when i got it, all I could taste was lemons. The veal was dry and the sauce was way too sweet, not good. My boyfriend got pasta, it was mediocre, nothing to rave about and very small portions. I was very disappointed b/c this looked like such a cute place next to all the big, flashy places on Columbus. I don't think I'd go back.
great food!. Wow, Went to Figaro's on Thursday night and had the best meal I have ever had in North Beach. I started out with the fried calamari and it was just right. Not chewy like most, perfect. Then I had the infamous gnocchi that held up to their reputation. Very impressive.
pleasantly surprised!. My boyfriend and I went to Figaro last night because a friend had told me that they had a great meal there. She was right. We had a crab risotto that was to die for lasagna was real tasty. Service was prompt and polite and the prices were right on. I will be back!
Cute and good service, but so-so food.. We went here for the gnocchi and found it doughy, not light as it's meant to be. This was surprising as it's the house specialty. We also have the crab risotto which looked great on the menu, but had little crab in the risotto itself and most of it still in the crab claws. It was a lot of work, and like the gnocchi, it was doughy. In constrast, the panna cotta was very good! Sweeter and lighter textured than most places I've had it, which works for me! Service was quick and the atmosphere was light and enjoyable. Based on what we ordered, I would give this restaurant a lower rating than it has.
North Beach gnocchi house with premium pastas and abundant alfresco seating..
Mosaic tiled floors, frescoed ceilings and a large bar set the scene in the dining room, while a fireplace, twinkling white lights and a huge mural of the Assisi hills create a romantic atmosphere on the 70-seat garden patio. The menu features antipasti favorites, such as minestrone soup and carpaccio with pine nuts and olive oil, but the forte is gnocchi -- stuffed with everything from truffles and mushrooms to ricotta and spinach.
Excellent food and service. This was our first time dining in North Beach and we were very happy with our choice of Figaros. We were seated promptly upon arrival and had a very attentive waiter with excellent service. The bruschetta was only average, but the rest of the meal was wonderful. The Ravioli de Zucca was incredible and the tiramisu was the best I've had. I would definitley recommend this restaurant.
Great tunes, food, and staff. It had been 6 months so I had eaten at Figaro so passing by the other nightI decided to eat there again. It was better than ever. This new waiter Tony is so charming and on the ball he made my girlfriends and I have a great time. We had gnocchi, their specialty dish, and it was fantastic. Compared to a lot of Italian restaurants in the city, Figaro is priced very fairly too! A 9 overall!
An undiscovered gem in North Beach!. I walk by Figaro every day on my way to work but had never been in before. So last Thursday night I saw that they had a heated garden patio and decided to get a bite with my friend. It was so cool to sit outside on a patio away form all the madness on Columbus Avenue. I had no idea how pretty Figaro is inside. There is a mural on the back patio and a gorgeous fresoced ceiling. Besides the ambiance, our waiter was just too cute and our pasta was to die for. I will surely go back to Figaro as it was the best dining out experience I have had in North Beach.
What's up with the bad service?. This is the second time I've visited this place, the first time it was great I mean they really do have great Pizza here and our server was wonderful and helpful. So I went back this Sunday for lunch, and man was the server terrible. During our whole meal he never once asked how was out food, never refilled our water or bread. It wasn't busy or anything. I don't think I'll go back there again, there are so many great Italian restaurant in and around North Beach, no one should have to put up with such aweful service.
damn good gnocchi!. Poor Figaro gets overlooked by many patrons on Columbus Ave. who are drawn to the bling bling of the next door Calzones. Figaro is North Beach's best kept secret. Not only is the interior truly beautiful with its fresco ceiling and paintings, the food is truly tasty. I love the truffle gnocchi and the fusilli pasta with goat cheese and mushrooms. The day manager Gian Luca is so cute I can hardly stand it. He is so full of energy it cracks me up. This past time was my third time at Figaro, and my third great experience. We sat outside on the back patio which I never know existed. The patio will be great in the spring and summer. I will defenitely go back!
Spiced by the Kitchen!. Seated promptly, however: We had to remind the waitress that we had ordered our starter. We received a cold Spinach and Ricotta pasta, sent it back. Recieved it back again, clearly no Ricotta in it. Received 2 different excuses (Ricotta at bottom of pot, chef doesn't use much Ricotta) Sent it back again, received brand new dish, still no Ricotta, tasted of frozen spinach warmed up in pasta. Ordered a new gnocci dish, received a blatantly spiced marinara gnocci dish back, hottest marinara we had ever tasted. Clearly on purpose from the kitchen. Asked for the check and to leave, we received another gnocci dish (that we didn't touch), the good news was that we did get dinner for two from the Maitre d'. But no explanation for the lack of Ricotta or the super spicy dish. Avoid!
