Neighbor sushi restaurant with good atmosphere, rarely had to wait & opens til Midnite. Mama-san (owner) and her hubby is friendly and we've had only one bad experience but I think that waitress is gone now. The food and ambiance is great for date night or just to hang with the old, old lady : ). If you drink alot of tea, tell them and they will cruise by more often to do the refills (don't know why they won't leave the teapot on the table (which are nice sized) - figure its service). As for the food, fresh - I usually order the ikura with quail egg and the salmon roe "pops" - not chewy which means fresh (old means chewy and taste like fish.. I know, for those that's gonna say, what are you eating at a sushi place if it's NOT fishy... trust me, you don't want your ikura "fishy" - must be fresh, popping and sharp). Presentation is nice - large plates and looks like the food takes most of that (hate the gigantic plate and one small item presentation). Parking is usually good and it you have to, there's always this Toyota Toy Shop auto repair next door where I would park a little into the driveway but put a note where I'm at with cell phone.. so far no calls, haven't been towed or ticketed.. Down a few blocks on Geary there's like three sushi places on one block (22nd/Geary) and the food here at Tani is definitely better and especially the tea (I'm a tea drinker). For those saki lovers - small selection.... but if I wanted saki - go to Hana Zen near Macy's. Only negative is that sometimes the chef gets creative and takes longer than I would like but I guess that's what good company is for (hi, Claire!!). Bathroom is clean and modern. Cost for two is usually around $40.

Great sushi, poor customer service and professionalism. This place is one the worst sushi places I've ever been to !!! Don't get me wrong. Their sushis are probably one of the best in the city. I ordered the Godzilla which was one of their deep-fried sushis. When it arrived on my table, it was still hot and fresh. Their prices are quite reasonable for the portion during dinner time. They were fresh and tasted really great. The place itself has a nice ambiance and they have 50% off on beers and sake after 9:30 pm. However, the service that we received was degrading the nice ambiance and awesome food that we had. The waitress for our table was rude, she doesn't even know what sushi she's bringing to the table. Our group had 11 people and 2 separate checks. She brought the sushi that was ordered by Group B, but insisted in a rude way that it was ordered by Group A. Both groups ordered a total of 8 sushi rolls, and they came out 1 by 1. what were they thinking? to have 1 person eat one at a time? I've told the waitress that one more person was coming. When she arrived, they didn't even bother to get the chair for her. We had to get the chair ourselves. After our friend sat down for a good 20 minutes, they still didn't give her any napkins and utensils to eat with. Even after her order arrived!! Can't they see when they brought over her order that she doesn't have any utensils to eat it with? For a first-timer coming to this place, the waitress really left a bad impression for me and for our group. We are certainly having second thoughts to come to this place again. Even a perfect meal can be horrendous with poor customer service skills. We might go there again in the future after we get over our bad experience and if the customer service is improved, I will definitely give them higher ratings. (Note: the poor customer service that we received does not pertain to the whole crew since it was our first time and unfortunately, we had a bad one).
