What are they thinking?. Was looking forward to dinning here but the space is NOT wheelchair accessible and no alterate entrance. How is that possible today? They offered to carry me and my wheelchair up the steps! Are you kidding. Talk about possible liabilty issues. How can anyone be so oblivious? What a joke.
paul k for brunch?. paul k had me at first menu glance. It started when my friend sent me the menu link while we were determining where to go for brunch. The maple-glazed bacon was like foodie e-porn for me. After a daunting work seek, my recipe called for good friends, good conversation, atlantic salmon benedict, perfectly crunchy maple-glazed bacon, and a bloody mary. Combine and add a second bloody mary (bottomless) and you have the perfect Saturday.
Loved the food. First visit and we had a wonderful meal. Great flavors, nicely presented and very tasty. We had several appetizers: artichokes poached in olive oil, fried okra, Pomegranate lamb riblets; entrees: Lamb leg, mixed seafood plate and for dessert: chocolate decadence. Food was nicely spiced and had great flavor combination. Staff friendly & helpful. Cocktails - very good, wine advice helpful. We were there on a Tuesday night and they were quite busy by the time we left (on our way to see Wicked). Favorites would be the lamb riblets and the chocolate decadence. Yum. btw - easy location for dining pre-event: opera, ballet, shows at the Orpheum Theater. Will be back!
Love your Bottomless Mimosa. we found Paul K Restaurant is the great new spot for Brunch on Sunday in the Hayes Valley. Your bottomless Mimosa is perfect! We found your hostess "Kat" was great! (we were Brunch customers from Tangerine). We will definitely let all the friends know that Paul K is the new Hot spot to be on Sunday Brunch...keep it up!
Best Mediterranean restaurant in San Francisco. been there the 3rd time, love it! Not only great food but the service is nice! Love to see how chefs preparing foods right there ( we like seating at the "Bar") The flower arrangements deco in the restaurant is always so beautiful and perfect for my Romantic date. "Paul" the owner is always there to make sure everything came out great! not a lot of restaurants do that anymore, show how they care about their foods and guests. the worm salad was different but love it! the home made bread that they serve while waiting for meal is mouth watering. looking forward to the next visit there again.
Decent food & service. Cute restuarant. ts a very cute spot. The service was good. Food was decent if not completely un remarkable. We had the mezza sampler to start. It was OK. I had the seabass and my bf had the chicken. Neither of them were bad but neither of them had any flavour and the chicken was a bit dry. THe huckleberry cake was the same...non-descript and blah. A very BEIGE meal.
Mixed bag.... We ate at paul k on Friday. I had heard great things about it, so I was excited. The ambience of the restaurant is hip and fun. Nice bar area as well. They have an innovative and interesting wine list with a great selection for all tastes and wallets. The service was attentive but lackluster--nothing overtly bad but nothing very impressive, either. We had two appetizers--the artichoke hearts (bland preparation--more oily than anything) and steamed mussels (delicious, with feta/mint/tomatoes mixed into the broth). Our entrees were disappointing...the grilled lambchops were so fatty that I could barely cut them with my knife (surprising since lamb is usually lean). The grilled prime ribeye tasted more like flank steak. We had the cheese plate for dessert--very good with a glass of their tawny port. All in all, it was good, but nothing to write home about.
Paul K....deee-lish!. Food was good. Try there falafel appetizer & lamb kebabs...yummy! Our server, Richard, was the best. Loved his description of foods! We lucked out on the parking (right in front) but you could tell it might be a problem. Other than that...we highly recommend it!
Cozy, Cool, Creative. Both of us hadn't been to this jazzy spot for a couple years, and we each left with smiles on our faces and warmth in our hearts. The gracious host, the professional staff and the quirky and experienced waiter set the perfect foundation for a night of excellent local dining. My grilled romaine with dates was inspired. Her asparagas soup (no cream!) was a silk ribbon of springtime wonder. Our neighbors had the lamb riblets, and were kind enough to share - yum. The wine list, while short, is wonderfully diverse and unpretentious. Her lamb tenderloin was sublime, my crispy skin salmon was cooked to a perfect medium with the crunchiest skin atop a bed of piquant lentils with bursts of crunchy pancetta. And make sure to have the sorbets, they're house made and paired beautifully with one another. The music is modern and clean, and not overpowering - yet another subtly chic element to make the night one of those special "San Francisco Memories". Oh, and the crowd was full of beautiful people of all makes, models and ages. An excellent night.
An OK, Mediterranean Restaurant. Good food, ok service, Waitress had ZERO personality. We went with a party of eight women, food was good, the seared salmon, was only seared on the skin side, and served skin up...very unusual. The lamb riblets are awesome, but I dont' think the measure of a restaurant should be one item that is outstanding, and the rest of the food is just OK. Fire Station around the corner, so you'll have lots of red lights, and sirens to seranade you.
Fireworks in our mouths!. I'm glad I finally popped into this little gem! My friend and I arrived at 8pm, and were impressed by the cool decor and the hip, jazzy beats playing. Though we didn't have the super animated waiter I'd heard was part of the "Paul K experience," ours was funny, and offerred us the guidance of a true pro who knows the food he's serving inside and out. After his recommendation on the bottle of Archery Summit Pinot Noir, and the Mezza Platter blew our minds with complex, unusual flavors, we simply set down the menus and allowed him to give us what he called "The Limo Ride," where we relaxed and he ordered everything he thought we'd love. He was right indeed. The Arctic Char, a fish I'd never had, was rich, complex, and delicious. The duck was moist, sweet, tangy, and savory! A wonderful experience all around!
Unfriendly service. We had a reservation for 9:00, waited 35 minutes to get seated at 9:35. The host did a good job of letting us know the status of our table so we didn't mind waiting. While we waited we sat at the bar and ordered 2 different glasses of red wine-both tasted old. But the bartender did offer to swap them for other wines and the next two we had were good. We then were seated and had a waitress who was impatient and rude. Clearly tried to rush us out. We only had small plates and the mezes which were all really good but our waitress was so short with us and rude that it kind of spoiled the whole dining experience. Overall, this is San Francisco and for a restaurant with good food and a decent wine list the service needs to be on par.
Stay Away From This Disaster. Note that the good reviews were all from last year. I think something must have happened. The place was empty at 7:30pm and that should have set off alarm bells. Service was mediocre -- our waitress couldn't explain the wines and forgot to bring us water after we had to ask for it. The sea bass was a plate of bland beige. No flavor and boiled-to-death vegitables. The duck tasted like it was soaked in white wine vinegar -- it made our mouths pucker. We couldn't wait to get out of there. It was a huge dining mistake for us --- don't make the same one that we did.
Not so good! Please stay away!!!!. First of all, the ambience is quite nice..but the food was just horrible. It was a slow nightthere were about three table occupied. There were plenty of tables available, but the hostess seats us next to the restroom. Me and my boyfriend ordered the chicken and prime ribeye for prices ranging from $21-$26 each. For the price I've had WAY better food. The flavors were just "okay"...nothing special...they were a bit bland. Entree was too oily and vegs. were not cleansed very well because I could taste the grains of sand. We also paid $10 for appetizer for three pieces of shrimp with ? cup of greens. This restaurant is wanna be of an upscale restaurant. The plating for our entree didn't even look nice...the food was just slab onto our plate like at a cheap cafe. Save your money and go some where else.
User review by dragave. Great little find! Our table right at the front and at the edge of the maitre's podium, wa tight but we weren't crushed or fumbled over. The waitress-in-training visited (with her mentor ) was attentive, easy to understand and able to answer all questions without hesitaion. Her reccommendation of the Mezzo Platter was right-on. Its blend of Mediterranean flavors and textures demonstrated the restaurant's ablility to be creative and exceptional with standard middle-east standards. The lamb riblets were done to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The lamb with pomegranite suace that was piquant and wonderfully contrary to standard heavy, sweet sauces the often smother the dish. My sumac crusted chick was absolutely one of the best chicken dishes I have ever had! The perfectly juicy, crispy skinned chicken breast made me want more. The entire experience was thoroughly enjoyable. Paul K will be my first choice in this genre of dining
Quite interesting food, if you choose wisely. We were a pretty large group of friends, made reservations at the last minute, but were seated more or less on time. The ambience is quite pleasant and lively, just a tad noisy. The food in general had some really nice touches, with wonderful aromas from all the spices. However, while most of us were very satisfied with their food (duck, fish, mezzes), some dishes badly disappointed (the eggplant was bland and poor-value). All in all, I recommend it for people with adventurous taste, as the more exotic the ingredients, the more satisfying the food seemed to be. The service could be improved, as our waitress was a bit distracted and slow.
horrible service. Extremely disappointed! Even though my party had reservations we had to wait 30 minutes before being seated. Usually that is not a problem since you can just head over to the bar for some cocktails. The bartender was inexperienced and it took him 15 minutes to make 4 drinks. He made 2 of our drinks then proceeded to make drinks for the people seated before finishing the rest of our order. A complaint about the long wait was made to the host, which was relayed to the manager, but no apology was every given. The night could've been salvaged if our food and waiter made up for it, but it didn't. The small plates were mediocre and I found the server blah. Unfortunately, VERY disappointed in this restaurant. The bartender and manager were very pretentious. I definitely DO NOT recommend it. Save yourself the trouble and skip this joint.
a place you can count on. I have been going to Paul K for acouple of years and love it for last minute dinning out and for special occasions. Even though the menu changes, I know I can count on the food to be great and creative. The atomsophere is caual and fun. The staff is great. I've been going for years and have seen the same staff which is nice because it give it a real feeling of a neighborhood restaurant. They are friendly and very knowledgeable about what they are serving and not at all uptight. The cocktails are fabulous and the wine list is very unique and not overpriced. This is a great place to discover creative California cuisine with a Mediterranean flare. Prepare to be wowed!
Overrated. Trying to mimic the NY hip scene, this restaurant fails miserably. The food portions are small and the menu microscopic. The wine and cocktail selection is passable however. If you are pretentious and want to be seen, this is the place but if you desire meditteranean food....you will be sadly disappointed. The service is OK at first but later on the waiters cannot handle a full restaurant and then you have to wait for an hour to get some pita.
Despite the Hype.... Very skeptical with all the advertisement and hype I had seen but was very pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. As advertised, the scene is very hip and trendy. The wait staff service was sub-par. Several actually looked really bored. The food is definitely worth the visit. Delicious!
